TODAY LOBMEYR IS RUN AS A FAMILY BUSINESS IN THE SIXTH GENERATION

The love and care for the material, the emotional reference to the product and the drive of personal passion have always defined our identity and working methods. Every generation has left its mark in this sense.

In 1823 Josef Lobmeyr Senior founded the company in Vienna’s Weihburggasse and soon became k & k purveyor to the court for the Habsburg imperial family. His sons Josef and Ludwig Lobmeyr took over the business from 1855-1917.

Ludwig became the most important protagonist of Austrian-Bohemian glass production and presented the company at the first global exhibitions. In 1864, he co-founded the present Museum of Applied Arts Vienna. Ludwig’s nephew Stefan Rath Senior (1902-1960) led Lobmeyr into the modern age and was co-founder of the Österreichische Werkbund in 1912. Classic pieces were created with Josef Hoffmann as well as artists from the Wiener Werkstätte. Hans Harald Rath (1938-1968) rebuilt Austrian glass production after the war and revolutionised the crystal chandelier. One example is the central chandelier in the Vienna State Opera. Harald, Peter and Stefan Rath (1968-2008) expanded the company, developed the Arab and Japanese markets and opened the branch in Salzburg. The company took over the chandelier manufacturer Zahn in 1972. Andreas, Leonid and Johannes Rath (since 2000) have expanded international sales and focused on intensive cooperation with designers of the new generation.
